Measure U Modernization Update: HVAC Installation in the Large Gym and Cafeteria

Posted Date: 07/02/26 (09:26 AM)

Dear Sierra Unified Community,

I'm pleased to share an update on the second phase of our Measure U modernization projects, and to thank our community for the continued support that is making this work possible.

Bringing air conditioning to our large gymnasium and cafeteria was one of the highest priorities identified through Measure U. These spaces are used every day for physical education, athletics, performances, assemblies, and community events, and construction on both is now well underway.

Like most state-approved construction projects, our schedule has been shaped by the Division of the State Architect (DSA) approval process, along with a few site conditions that came to light once work began. As a result, the HVAC system is now projected to be operational by September 9 — somewhat later than our original goal of having it running before the first day of school.

Current project milestones:
•Concrete work and placement of the HVAC unit: by July 31
•Completion of remaining interior work: late August
•HVAC system startup and operation: by September 9

We are continuing to work closely with our contractor, MWC, to identify every opportunity to accelerate this schedule wherever possible.

While we had hoped the new cool air would be ready by the start of the new school year, the timeline of construction is slightly later. The excitement is building and once up and running, students, staff and even the community will be thrilled to enjoy fall sports in the newly air conditioned gym. Our administrative team is already planning ways to minimize the impact on students and families. As one example, we are working to reschedule our first volleyball match of the season, so our student-athletes and spectators can compete in a more comfortable setting.

We will keep the community informed as each milestone is reached. We're sharing the current schedule now so families can plan with confidence, and we'll let you know promptly if the timeline improves.

This installation is only the beginning of the improvements Measure U makes possible. Thanks to our community's support, these projects will create safer, more comfortable, and more functional spaces that will serve Sierra Unified students for years to come. We appreciate your patience as we navigate the realities that come with major construction, and we look forward to celebrating the completion of this first phase together.

Thank you for your continued support of Sierra Unified School District and our students.

Sincerely,
Dr. Lori GraceSuperintendent
