Superintendent’s District Message – Testing

As we move into the spring months, our schools also enter an important time of year, state testing season. While assessments are just one measure of student learning, they do provide valuable insight into how our students are progressing and how we, as a district, can continue to improve in supporting their success. Just as importantly, this is an opportunity to reinforce habits that help students build confidence, manage challenges, and demonstrate what they know.

At Sierra Unified, we want every student to approach testing with a sense of preparedness and calm. Success on assessments is not about perfection, it’s about showing growth, applying skills, and doing one’s best. Families and educators play a key role in helping students feel ready, both academically and emotionally.

One of the most important ways to prepare is also one of the simplest: ensuring students are well-rested. A good night’s sleep helps with focus, memory, and overall well-being. In the days leading up to testing, maintaining consistent routines can make a meaningful difference. A healthy breakfast each morning is equally important, as it fuels the brain and helps students stay attentive throughout the day.

We also encourage students to take their time and read each question carefully. It can be tempting to rush, but slowing down often leads to better understanding and more accurate responses. If a question feels challenging, students should remember that it’s okay to pause, take a deep breath, and try again. Perseverance is a critical skill—not just for testing, but for life.

Confidence plays a powerful role in performance. We remind our students that they have been preparing for this all year long through their daily learning. These assessments are simply an opportunity to show what they already know. Encouraging positive self-talk—reminding themselves “I can do this”—can help reduce anxiety and improve focus.

Families can support this effort at home by creating a calm and encouraging environment. Simple gestures, such as offering words of encouragement, ensuring students arrive at school on time, and limiting late-night activities during testing weeks—can go a long way. Asking your child about what they are learning, rather than focusing solely on test results, reinforces a growth mindset and helps keep the experience positive.

Our teachers and staff are working hard to ensure that students feel supported and prepared. They are reviewing key concepts, building familiarity with testing formats, and creating classroom environments where students feel confident in their abilities. This collective effort reflects our shared commitment to student success.

As we enter this testing season, I encourage all of us—students, families, and staff—to keep perspective. These assessments are one snapshot of learning, not a definition of a student’s potential. What matters most is the effort our students put forward, the resilience they show when faced with challenges, and the growth they achieve along the way.
